La Maison Calderitas is located on the border between Mexico and Belize, facing the Chetumal Lagoon. Humidity, heat, and sun exposure are the main factors that define its subtropical climate, with temperatures ranging between 28 and 30°C for about ten months of the year. It was precisely these climatic conditions that led our client to contact us with the goal of “repairing” the house. The existing structure had a considerable surface area (around 880 m²) but lacked basic thermal comfort and an efficient spatial organization to mitigate the heat. Our design focuses on the idea of protection and coexistence with the local climate, without giving up the enjoyment offered by the ecosystem. rich in fauna and flora. that characterizes the region.
The mashrabiya, an emblem of Arabic and tropical architecture, serves as an elegant environmental filter. Its lattice structure diffuses sunlight, casts intricate shadow patterns, and facilitates cross-ventilation. The mashrabiyas are made from lightweight and durable composites, serving as an adaptive layer that translates traditional climatic craftsmanship into modern climate efficiency.
